Acupuncture and Fertility

Acupuncture and Fertility: What can acupuncture help?

Acupuncture has been successfully helping women conceive for thousands of years.

It is particularly useful in regulating and balancing the menstrual cycle. A healthy menstrual cycle is one of the most important factors in increasing the chance that a woman my get pregnant.

Why is a healthy cycle so important in fertility? Because timing is so important! The cycle of hormones, the thickness of your lining, the time of implantation, etc. For instance if the hormone cycle is off, and a woman ovulates too early or too late, the fertilized egg is less likely to successfully implant in the uterus. Eggs that implant later in the menstrual cycle are more likely to be miscarried.

So what defines a healthy menstrual cycle?

• Having a regular period and consistent period. This means you get your cycle every month and the cycles come close to 28 days apart. The closer to 28 days, the better.

• Menstrual bleeding lasts about 5 days.

• Bleeding is moderate (not heavy), and tapers off towards the end of the cycle.

• Blood is red in color, not dark (maroon) or bright (fire engine).

• No clots are present in the blood.

• NO signs of PMS…ie. no breast tenderness, no irritability, no cramps, no headaches, no fatigue, no gas and bloating, no cravings! In fact, if you are not aware of what day you are on, you should be completely surprised by your period starting.

Yes, it is possible to have a healthy menstrual cycle, and acupuncture is one of the tools that can help you get there.

Acupuncture and Assisted Fertility

Acupuncture has been very successful in helping clients undergoing UIU or IVF.

In various studies, Acupuncture hasAcupuncture IVF shown to increase the implantation rate in IVF by 15-20%.

For IVF, ideally treatment occurs twice a week for 4 weeks leading up to the transfer. These treatments help to increase uterine blood flow.

Then acupuncture should be received (preferably at the place of transfer) immediately preceding the transfer and immediately after the transfer. If it is not possible to begin treatment 4 weeks before hand, acupuncture can still increase success rates on the day of the transfer.
